The Mount in the Great Lake

“The Mount in the Great Lake”, an image from Jean Roque’s 1735 plan of Wanstead Park. It is almost certain that this shows a grotto on the island in what became known as the Heronry Pond. Close examination of a painting of c.1750-60 attributed to Charles Catton, showing Wanstead Park from the east, suggests that something like this grotto was completed before Lord Tylney’s money ran out in the 1740s.
