New park benches welcomed

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands are celebrating the completion of a practical project to improve visitors’ experience of Wanstead Park.

In 2016 the group made a grant application through Tesco's “Bags of Help” programme - derived from the 5p bag charge - to replace the worn-out benches near the Heronry Pond. With the help of staff in the park's tea hut, they collected over a thousand signatures from visitors in support. After putting the scheme to a vote of customers in local stores, along with two other community projects, Tesco made a grant award of £8,000. The benches were officially opened by Philip Woodhouse, Chairman of the City of London’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, on 28 June.

Chairman John Meehan said: “It’s great to see new benches and tables installed thanks to an initiative by the Friends. Our thanks go to Tesco for the funding, and to the City of London for its support”.
